This presentation is an introduction to the field of conductor Sag & Tension.  It will reveal the basic concepts involved in the behavior of overhead conductors that are strung up under tension between structures and operated under a range of electrical loading conditions.  Also described are the influences on conductor behavior by external forces such as ice accumulation, hurricane winds, solar heating, and varying ambient air temperatures.

While designing an overhead line is quite beyond the scope of this presentation, it provides the basic principles of conductor behavior that a line designer needs to understand in order to properly construct the sag & tension charts for an overhead line.

Just for fun, it will answer a few historical questions, like:

Who built the first overhead electrical line in America?

Where and when was the first overhead power line built?

When and where was the first commercial 220 kV transmission line built in the USA?

Register now for the opportunity to learn about a subject whose somewhat obscure knowledge has evolved for more than 100 years.

Bring your questions for an interactive presentation and discussion.

Agenda

Tuesday, May 17th;   Everyone Welcome;   Pre-Registration Required;   No Fees.

Attendance is limited.  IEEE Member Early Registration 2-Week Period begins April 8th.  Member number is required.

Non-Member/Guest Registration begins April 22nd; non-members/guests registering prior to April 22nd will receive an auto-confirmation, but your seat will not be reserved/processed until April 22nd.  No need to register again.  Thanks for your interest in IEEE!

Registration closes Monday, May 16th, 11:59 PM Eastern.

If you find it necessary to cancel, please send a message to above Host: Lehigh Valley Section Chapter.  No-Shows are unfair to others we would turn away if class is full.  Thank you.

WebEx will open early by 3:30 PM. The log-in link & dial-in numbers will be e-mailed "day of", only to those who have pre-registered.  Attendance will be recorded electronically.  Phone-in callers, from any vintage phone, are also welcome with self-identification or be expelled.

WebEx attendance is FREE; no WebEx account needed.

Join the WebEx early to test & adjust your settings.  Networking for everyone begins at 4 PM.

Presentation will start promptly at 4:30 PM Eastern.

Attendees may speak and ask questions.  This will be an interactive meeting, NOT a one-way lecture.  Webcam use is your choice.

Your e-mail address, as registered, is our only method of communication and will be used for issuing the WebEx log-in link & phone dial-in number, slides when available, PDH, and any program change/cancellation messages.

Certificate for 2 PDH is available only upon advance request.  IEEE membership is required for a PDH certificate.  You must include your active IEEE membership number.  Certificates in pdf format will be issued post-meeting, when volunteers can prepare them, to those who (a) requested one in advance and (b) attended the entire meeting.
