The Education from primary to post-seconday School and the ELSI(Ethical, Legal, and Societal Issues) of Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence
There are high social expectations and needs for education in mathematical sciences, data sciences, and artificial intelligence. We can see such example of expectations as the start of the Approved Program for Mathematics, Data Science and AI Smart Higher Education of the MEXT(MDASH). In particular, with regard to the part of the "Kokoro-e"(ethical, legal, and societal issues on mathematical sciences, data sciences, and artificial intelligence) of the MDASH program, which is an interdisciplinary field requires knowledge and thought of humanities and sciences, so many instructors may be wondering how to provide such education and training of the "Kokoro-e" part.
The education of "Kokoro-e" part of the program requires knowledge and expertise on ELSI (ethical, legal, and societal issues) of sciences and technologies. The ELSI research program was established for the first time in the Human Genome Project (HGP) started in the United States in 1990. In the HGP, a budget of 3% to 5% of the entire research program will be given to ELSI program.
There are various ELSIs in data science and artificial intelligence. For example, it is known that its use may amplify people's discrimination and prejudice, hinder people's free choices, and distort the perception of the world on which their choices are based. There is also ongoing debate about who is responsible for the resulting harm when machines operate autonomously in society, leaving the hands of human control, such as self-driving cars. It is expected that these issues will be dealt with in the part of "Kokoro-e" in the MDASH program.
However, it can be considered that we have already entered an era when we enjoy and sufferd from the vorious application of data sciences and AI. So, we also need to give primary ELSI education to our child in primary and secondary shools and the education on the ELSI of such scieneces is not limited to university.
In this symposium, adding to two instructors of the "kokoro-e" MDASH course inthe Open University of Japan, who are the SITE members, we will have a up-and-coming pedagogist of education of the ELSI of artificial intelligence in primary and secondary education. We have three lectures of these sholars and discussions among the sholars and the experts from pegatogy fields.
