This presentation will provide a brief overview and technology update to show how advances in modern 
semiconductor devices have led to higher ratings and more flexible HVDC and FACTs Systems (SVC, STATCOM, 
TCSC etc.) We will try and show how pressure to develop higher power semiconductors for other industries such as 
traction drives, VFDs, and otter industrial settings, and how these market pressures have allowed the R&D and 
development and applications experiments to really push for advances in both the Line Commutated (LCC) and 
Voltage Source (VSC) applications.
