Digital RF PLLs for Wi-Fi: Present and Future
In this talk, we discuss the main design challenges for PFD-CP-based, TDC-based and subsampling/sampling PLLs in order to meet the required noise performance for Wi-Fi 6 and future Wi-Fi generations.
We show the trade-offs (i) between in-band noise and VCO/DCO noise and (ii) between integrated jitter and Fractional-N spurs.
Then, we review the state-of-the-art PLLs in terms of the compromises mentioned above.
Finally, we highlight some promising techniques from the Literature to improve the PLL noise performance towards the next Wi-Fi generations.
Biography:
Francesco Brandonisio received his Bachelor and Master in Electronic Engineering in Politecnico di Bari, Italy, in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He received his PhD in Electronics on all-digital PLLs in 2012 in University College Cork, Ireland. He was a post-doctoral researcher on all-digital PLLs in Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland from 2012 to 2014. He worked in Infineon, Villach, Austria from 2015 to 2021 where he was technical leader for digital PLLs in automotive microcontrollers. In 2022, Francesco joined Maxlinear, Villach, Austria where he has been working on RF all-digital PLLs for Wi-Fi.
He is author of the book "Noise-Shaping All-Digital Phase-Locked Loops: Modeling, Simulation, Analysis and Design" and owns 2 patents.
