IEEE Day: Why Your Technical Skillset Might Not Be Enough & 'State of the IEEE Pikes Peak Section'

The IEEE University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) Student Branch and IEEE Pikes Peak Section, will celebrate IEEE Day on 6 Oct 2022. 

The IEEE Pikes Peak Section will be visiting IEEE UCCS Student Branch to gather their needs and requirements. and are prepared to provide two presentations.

Three presentatons are given:  One is about a general status update to the Pikes Peak Section and the next two are for IEEE UCCS Student Branch.  

The first talk is a short 6-minute video recording narrated by Dr John Santiago talking about the Status Update of the Achievements from the IEEE Pikes Peak Section located  at:  IEEE Region 5 Achievements Forum, 9 September 2022 | IEEE Pikes Peak Section. The talk was in preparation for the Region 5 Achievements Forum, scheduled for 9 Sep 2022 presenting IEEE Pikes Peak Section Status Update and Achievements for historical purposes.  A follow-up virtual session will be scheduled shortly following IEEE Day to address any comments or questions from the video.  You can send your comments and questions to Dr. Santiago at

The next two presentations are scheduled from 11:00 am- 12:30 am at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) at the Saponas Lounge in the Engineering and Applied Science Building (Second floor).  Unfortunately, UCCS has limited seating. 

The first two members of the Pikes Peak Section to contact Dr John Santiago at before 6 Oct 2022 will be able to attend the two presentations.

The first presentation, entitled, "Why Having a Technical Mindset May Not Be Enough", and given by Dr. John Santiago (Chair, IEEE Pikes Peak Section and Webmaster) will highlight about being successful in an engineering career.  Dr Santiago will introduce an integrated growth mindset focusing on creating value and system thinking [found on the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN)] , and Pyramid of Success On Leadership as a framework in helping student members achieve success while giving the students a competitive edge.  With accelerating changes in the global community, today’s solutions are often obsolete tomorrow.  What does this imply to student members as future engineers? Students will need to be empowered to investigate a rapidly changing world by persistently anticipating and meeting the needs of a changing world.  That is, students will need to pursue knowledge with their own discoveries to reveal innovative solutions. These innovative solutions must be meaningful in creating value that benefits themselves, their families, their employers and to society.  So having a technical skillset is not enough…find out what else you will need to help students become successful in their engineering career.

The second presentation, entitled, Going Pro, is given by Daniel Thomson (IEEE Pikes Peak Section Student and Young Professional Coordinator). When it comes to professional organizations like IEEE, you don't HAVE to be a member, but would you trust your doctor if they told you that they've never been a member of the American Medical Association? IEEE is the largest professional organization for software, electrical and computer engineering IN THE WORLD.  Within IEEE there are opportunities for absolutely anyone, even non-STEM majors! Why A Technical Skillset May Not Be Enough


Dr John Santiago served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force as a research and development engineer, as well as an engineering manager, gaining leadership & technical experience in many engineering disciplines, systems & missions: large flexible space structures, communications, electro-optical systems, high-energy lasers, missile seekers, image recognition, information technologies, space, air & missile defense & homeland defense.

He retired again during 2019 from an 18-year career as a full-time professor, including over 4 years at the USAF Academy. John is continuing to work with the Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN), a collaboration of 40+ universities & colleges while publishing several papers at the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) using the KEEN framework.

The framework combines the technical skill sets & the entrepreneurial mindset, to revolutionize the teaching of engineering.

As a professor of electrical & systems engineering, he taught 40+ courses in engineering, physics & math including 12 graduate courses, authoring 50+ papers, presentations & receiving several educator awards.

Daniel Thomson was born in Cape Town, South Africa in1996 and is the youngest of three.  He served a two-year mission to Scotland and Ireland with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Daniel received his B.S. Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University – Idaho class of 2021. He currently works for Keysight Technologies just off Garden of the Gods Avenue doing measurement science applications for High Performance Oscilloscopes.  Daniel is happily married, with two kids (a 2.5 year old boy and another boy born in August 2022).  He joined IEEE in 2018 and held the following volunteer positions: Student Branch Treasurer, Student Branch Chair, IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) member, IEEE Rising Stars Conference sponsorship committee & Executive Committee.  He is also a member of the ACM, Tau Beta Pi (ID Delta 2019), and the American Radio Relay League (ARRL).  Daniel is currently pursuing a Master’s of Engineering degree in Software Engineering at UCCS.
