K-Electric 132kV Gulshan Grid Visit
The advancements are rapidly uplifting the outlook of power sector nationwide. IEEE PES NEDUET devised a bright opportunity for the engineering disciple through an industrial visit dated on 3rd August 2022. To gauge the hub of electrical unit and power dispatch in Karachi, a visit was initiated at the only vertically-integrated utility; K-Electric Gulshan-e-Iqbal Grid Station.
Regulating power transmission within the central locations of the city, the grid station is a conventional unit functioning one 132 kV outdoor yard stepping down power to two indoor 11 kV yards to deliver power among KDA, Jail Road, Gulistan-e-Johar, Aga Khan University Hospital etc. This grid receives the necessary power to supply load centres via a total of 6 inbound transmission lines, including a 220 kV line, coming from other grids.
The enthusiastic undergraduates along with faculty noted AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear) & GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) installed. At the grid yard, bus couplers are used to make & break connections during service or abnormality detected by relays. Furthermore, circuit breakers undergo a breaker test to ensure that their contacts break simultaneously within a timeframe of 10 milliseconds to achieve total fault isolation.
Students were able to comprehend the off-load protection carried by isolators in the grid as well as the breakdown of K-Electric’s busbar scheme. Reserved busbars along with main busbars were utilised to deliver power to priority loads whereas the load management is being governed at the control office inside the 11kV yard. The demonstrators The line managers depicted the curiosity of students over the relay test blocks equipped under the panels. These test blocks are being simulated at faulty conditions isolated from real-time values for setting tripping time & magnitudes for safety of personnel & equipment comprising of the grid in a nutshell.

Agenda
The primary aim was to nurture the young minds with power systems domain & impart technical knowledge for the fieldwork. The core deliverables envisioned by IEEE PES add value creation at such occurrences. To gauge the hub of electrical unit and power dispatch in Karachi, a visit was initiated at the only vertically-integrated utility; K-Electric Gulshan-e-Iqbal Grid Station.
With practically hands-on scope delivered to the team, a short Q&A session was held. The primary aim was to nurture the young minds with power systems domain & impart technical knowledge for the fieldwork. The core deliverables envisioned by IEEE PES add value creation at such occurrences. IEEE PES looks forward to bridge the gap between practicality & knowledge for the pioneers-in-making under electrical systems.
