"Together Towards Gender Equity", a Panel Discussion on the occasion of the International Women's Day

The IEEE DEIS Student Branch Chapter at IIT Kanpur, India organised a panel discussion on March 7, 2023, in the honour of the International Women's Day celebration. The event was organised in hybrid mode with some of our panellists: Dr. C. K. Sahu, Ms. Atika Srivastava, Mr. Himanshu Gupta and Ms. Pratyasha Das along with the moderator Dr. Nandini Gupta present offline at ACES-214, EE Department, IIT Kanpur while another panellist, Dr. Alok R. Verma was present online through WebEx platform. The event had both offline and online participation of around thirty.
The theme of the panel discussion was “Together Towards Gender Equity” where the panellists addressed several challenges faced by women in professional life and the role of men towards gender equity.
Dr. Sahu highlighted the urgency of promoting equality and providing equal opportunities to women, considering the centuries of unequal treatment they have endured. Ms. Atika emphasized the importance of incentivizing society to understand the significance of women empowerment beyond just accelerating the process of change. Dr. Verma discussed the role of individual efforts and the psychological empowerment of women, with men contributing to the cause directly or indirectly through women. Mr. Himanshu highlighted the embedded patriarchal bias in society and the need for proactive measures from institutions to address women's issues in leadership roles. Ms. Pratyasha touched upon the fine line between equality and equity and expressed the need for awareness programs at the ground level to provide equal opportunities to all women.
The moderator, Dr. Nandini Gupta, wrapped up the discussion within an hour (3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. IST), summarizing the views of the panellists on critical questions such as whether women should rely on institutional support or take it upon themselves, and how gender equity benefits all stakeholders in the workplace and family, including men. The discussion was engaging and featured diverse perspectives from the audience coming from different academic backgrounds.
