          IEEE SB COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING MUNNAR in collaboration with PELS,  PES ,IAS societies has conducted an industrial visit for IEEE  members  to Bhoothathankettu   Dam and Power station on 1st.  April 2023.Bhoothathankettu power station is the only bulb turbine based power station in  Kerala  which is under construction and is yet to be commissioned. As it is not  commissioned  yet  it  was a great experience  for the participants.When a bulb turbine based  power  station  is commissioned the turbine will be  submerged  in water , so it  was  golden opportunity  to  visit  it  before  it got commissioned.

 

The   team  departed  at  9  AM IST  and arrived a t the  destination at 11:15 PM IST. The assistant Engineer , Mr. Chandrabose KP guided the participants. They got splitted in to two teams and guided by professionals. He explained about Bhoothathankettu  Small  Hydro  Electric  Project . Since the type of turbine used here is Bulb  turbine he  described  the  working  of turbine. He also explicated about the production  capability and distribution  management of the power  station .  It  is  Kerala's  first  ever  ' Bulb turbine'  power project .It is 11m above from the sea level. The power house is located at the right bank of river with a size of 53 m× 25.50m. its maximum gross head is 11.95m.

The type of turbine is determined by model test.The participants also saw the control room and the batteries used in power stations. As the power station is still under construction, the participants could clearly witness the systems.

 

 As student engineers ,  it  was  a  valuable opportunity  for  the  team to  witness  and  understand the  working of a Power Station and electricity production  . The team  also visited Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary.It is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. The group wrapped up the industrial visit by 3PM.
