Antenna Design using IE3D and FEKO softwares.


IEEE Women in Engineering Affinity Group of Goa College of Engineering in association with the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering organized a two-day workshop on Antenna Design using IE3D and FEKO softwares on 2nd and 3rd April 2023 in the Computer Centre of the Electronics & Telecommunication department, GEC from 2:00pm to 5:00 pm. The workshop was attended by 28 undergraduate and graduate students. The workshop was divided into two parts: On day One Professor Samarth Borkar used IE3D software to introduce the basic concepts and theory behind microstrip antennas, including their structure, radiation mechanism, and key parameters to the students, while on day two professor  Ashweeta Sawant covered the design of monopole, dipole, and Yagi-Uda antennas using the FEKO software. The workshop was organized to provide participants an overview of antenna design principles and techniques.

DAY 1: Introduction to Microstrip Antennas, Transmission Line and Power Divider Design

  • Overview of microstrip antenna types, applications, and advantages.

  • Understanding the design specifications and requirements, selecting appropriate substrate materials and dimensions and designing the feeding network and matching circuitry and understanding impedance matching.

  • Introduction to power dividers and their applications and designing power dividers for efficient signal distribution.

DAY 2: Monopole, Dipole, Yagi-Uda Antenna Design:

  • Introduction to monopole antennas and their characteristics and designing the antenna elements, such as the radiating element and ground plane. Analyzing radiation patterns and impedance matching techniques.

  • Understanding the concept of dipole antennas and their radiation properties and designing the dipole elements and feeder arrangement.

  • Introduction to Yagi-Uda antennas and their applications and designing the driven element, reflector, and director elements.

Agenda

Introducing participants to the principles of antenna design including topics such as antenna types and applications, antenna specifications, design considerations, and measurement techniques. Teaching students to design three different types of antennas using IE3D and FEKO software.





Overall, the antenna designing workshop was a success that provided participants with knowledge in antenna design. The workshop was well-organized, engaging, informative and was a valuable opportunity for those who work with electromagnetic simulation software to stay up-to-date with the latest technology and best practices in the field.
