IEEE Communication Society Karachi Chapter – A Technical Seminar on “Ulocking The Future: Exploring The Enchanting Possibilities Of 6G"

IEEE Communication Society (ComSoc) Karachi Chapter in collaboration with IEEE ComSoc Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) Student Chapter organized a technical seminar titled as “Unlocking the Future: Exploring The Enchanting Possibilities Of 6G”. This talk was delivered by Dr. Kapal Dev, on July 18, 2023, at the Video Conference Hall, IICT Building, MUET Jamshoro Pakistan. The seminar was co-funded by Distinguish Speaker Program, IEEE ComSoc, USA.

 

The total number of participants in this seminar were 63 in which 50 were IEEE members and 13 were non-IEEE members. The event started with the recitation of Holy Quran followed by the National Anthem of Pakistan. Afterwards, Dr. Umair Ahmed Korai, Vice Chair IEEE ComSoc Karachi Chapter, welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honors, Speaker, volunteers, and participants of the seminar. Prof. Dr. Aftab Ahmed Memon, DEAN Faculty of Electrical Electronics and Computer Engineering attended the talk as a Chief Guest and Prof. Dr. Faisal Karim Shaikh, Professor and Ex Chairman, Department of Telecommunication Engineering attended this seminar as a Guest of Honor. The seminar focused on Exploring The Enchanting Possibilities Of 6G. Following members have attended the seminar as guest:

The first session of the talk was delivered by Dr. Kapal Dev is currently serving as Assistant Lecturer at Department of Computer Science, Munster Technological University, Ireland. He formerly was a senior researcher at the same University. Previously, severed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the CONNECT Centre, School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Also, worked as 5G Junior Consultant and Engineer at Altran Italia S.p.A, Milan, Italy on 5G use cases.

The advent of the sixth generation of wireless technology, 6G, promises a future that surpasses our wildest imaginations. Dr. Kapal Dev, a renowned expert in the field, delivered a captivating presentation on the potential of 6G and the transformative possibilities it holds.

Roadmap to 6G

 

Dr. Dev outlined the roadmap towards 6G, highlighting the need for seamless connectivity, ultra-high data rates, and ultra-low latency. The transition from 5G to 6G involves significant advancements in network infrastructure, including the deployment of advanced antenna systems, millimeter-wave communication, and intelligent edge computing.

 

Expected Timeline of 6G Development, Standardization, and Launch

While the exact timeline for 6G development and standardization remains uncertain, Dr. Dev discussed the anticipated timeline based on ongoing research and industry trends. He highlighted that the standardization process for 6G is expected to begin in the early 2020s, with commercial deployments projected for the late 2020s or early 2030s.

 

Emerging 6G Applications

Dr. Dev discussed the exciting applications that 6G will enable, including:

1. Smart Cities: 6G will revolutionize urban living, enabling smart transportation systems, intelligent energy grids, and advanced healthcare services.
2. Industry 4.0: 6G will empower industrial automation, robotics, and real-time monitoring, enhancing productivity and efficiency in manufacturing and logistics.
3. Extended Reality (XR): With ultra-low latency and ultra-high bandwidth, 6G will enable seamless XR experiences, transforming gaming, entertainment, and remote collaboration.

Internet of Skills: 6G will enable the transmission of skills and expertise remotely, opening up new possibilities in telemedicine, remote surgery, and remote training.

Dr. Dev discussed the enabling technologies that will underpin the development of 6G, such as:

6G Projects and Research Activities

Dr. Dev highlighted ongoing 6G research projects and initiatives worldwide. These collaborative efforts involve academia, industry, and standardization bodies to explore and develop novel technologies and architectures for 6G networks.

Dr. Kapal Dev's presentation on unlocking the future with 6G showcased the immense potential and enchanting possibilities this technology holds. Concluding the talk, Dr. Dev informed the audience about the fully funded scholarship opportunities in Ireland. The second session of this seminar was explaining the benefits of IEEE and IEEE ComSoc. This session was conducted by Dr. Umair Ahmed Korai explained the benefits of IEEE ComSoc, in particular. In last, the Worthy Guest of Honor, Prof. Dr. Faisal Karim Shaikh, gave the concluding remarks of the seminar. He acknowledged the efforts of guest speakers, organizers, and volunteers and encouraged the participants to explore in more depth about IEEE and importance of 6G. In the end, Dr. Umair Ahmed Korai, gave the vote of thanks to the Chief Guest, Guest of Honor, Speakers, Event Organizers, Collaborators, Volunteers, and Participants followed by shields and certificates distribution, and lunch.
