MegaDrone Workshop
One Week 'Megadrone' Workshop.
One week ‘Megadrone’ workshop was organized by IEEE JUIT SB in collaboration with IEEE R10 education activities and IEEE Delhi section from August 24 -30, 2023, in ECL5, Jaypee University of Information Technology, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India.
The JUIT Student Branch of IEEE proudly inaugurated the Megadrone Workshop, a comprehensive exploration into the world of drones. This workshop aimed to delve into the benefits, applications, types, and motions of drones.
The Mega-drone Workshop kicked off on the first day with a inauguration ceremony. The event began with an inspiring keynote speech by Dr. Vikas Baghel, a renowned expert in the field of drone technology. The inaugural session set the tone for an exciting and informative workshop.
After the inauguration, the participants were introduced to the fundamentals of drone technology. The sessions covered the following topics:
Introduction to Drones, An overview of what drones are, their history, and their various applications in today's world. Detailed explanations of the essential components of a drone, including the frame, motors, propellers, flight controller, and sensors, flight dynamics, safety regulations, and different types of drones were discussed, along with their specific use cases.
On the second day of the workshop, participants delved into the practical aspects of drone operation. The sessions focused on drone calibration, which is crucial for ensuring accurate flight performance. Topics covered included: gyro and accelerometer calibration, compass calibration, and configuring the RC transmitter to establish a reliable connection with the drone. The second half of the day was dedicated to understanding the principles of flight control. Participants learned in-depth of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers and how they help maintain stable flight, flight modes and their applications, and hands-on sessions on configuring the transmitter for precise control of the drone's movements.
Day 4 of the workshop was dedicated to understanding drone batteries and their management. Topics covered included an overview of different types of drone batteries, such as LiPo (Lithium Polymer) and Li-ion (Lithium-Ion) batteries, charging and discharging battery , tips for prolonging the lifespan of drone batteries and avoiding common battery-related issues.
Day 5 of the mega drone workshop focused on the legal and regulatory aspects of drone operation. Key topics covered included an overview of international regulations and guidelines governing drone usage, local regulations and safety and ethics. In the afternoon sessions, participants learned about the software and hardware configuration of drones. Introduction to popular flight controller software such as Betaflight and ArduPilot were discussed. Firmware updates and tips for hardware modifications and enhancements to customise drones for specific applications were also covered.
The Megadrone workshop organised by IEEE JUIT Student Branch was a resounding success, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of drone technology. The event covered everything from the basics of drones to advanced topics like calibration, assembly, battery management, regulations, and software/hardware configuration. It was a valuable learning experience for all attendees, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to explore the exciting world of drones further.
Final day, Ideathon was planned. Ideathon aimed to harness the collective creativity of diverse individuals to address complex challenges. The event brought together participants from various backgrounds and expertise.
The Megadrone Workshop Ideathon served as a hub of innovation, fostering collaboration and ideation. It empowered participants to think critically, solve complex problems, and present their ideas effectively—a testament to the power of collaborative ideation in the realm of drones and technology.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in intensive ideation sessions. Drawing from techniques mentioned in the provided resources, these sessions encouraged participants to think creatively and generate innovative ideas. These ideas formed the basis of their drone projects. Each day featured team presentations where participants shared their progress and ideas through well-prepared PowerPoint presentations. This allowed for constructive feedback and cross-pollination of ideas among teams.
The workshop would not have been possible without the dedication of the organisers, the expertise of the speakers, and the enthusiastic participation of the attendees. IEEE JUIT Student Branch looks forward to hosting more such educational events in the future, fostering a culture of innovation and learning among its members and the broader community.
