Meeting Description:

Please plan to attend this virtual meeting of the Industry Applications Society. The speaker will be Tim Allman, Systems Engineer, Cummins, Inc.

As commercial and industrial power systems are evolving to a mix of low- and no-carbon technologies, careful and extensive testing is required to understand the unique impacts that these will have. It was clear that this unique challenge needed a unique and flexible approach to developing microgrid system technologies without impacting the critical operations of our customers. A unique tool that Cummins brings to meet this challenge is the Power Integration Center (PIC) – A multi-asset, configurable microgrid test lab.

The primary role of the Power Integration Center is to serve as a scale representation of a customer power system which allows live microgrid testing in a controlled, and de-risked, environment. Critically, this is achieved through a configurable power system that can be changed to operate in a variety of electrical topologies without any additional installation work.

Strategy and funding discussions for building the PIC began in earnest in 2018, and the detailed design for the facility took place primarily in 2019. Construction of the facility began in 2020, with substantial completion of the build phase in November of 2021. In the first half of 2022, all major systems in the lab were commissioned and validated for operation. Following the formal opening of the lab in August of 2022, the facility is now officially open and operating as a test platform for complex microgrids.

As the power industry continues to evolve, so too will the capacities of the Power Integration Center. Expansion work is already in place in the areas of hydrogen fuel infrastructure (both for consumption and generation), as well as DC-coupled microgrid opportunities.

This presentation will showcase the Power Integration Center’s capabilities via virtual tour and live demonstration.
