David G. Williams P.E. and substation services Senior Engineer at FirstEnergy Corporation, will be presenting a 1-hour webinar on a new technology for Digital Substations, the IEC 61850 suite of standards.

A 1-hour PDH certificate will be provided to attendees for Professional Engineer Continuing Education.

IEC 61850 is a grouping of standards defining engineering and communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations. The abstract data models defined in IEC 61850 can be mapped to a number of protocols. Current mappings in the standard are to Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS), GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented System Event), and SV (Sampled Values) / SMV (Sampled Measured Values). Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IEEE 1588 / IEC-61850-9-3 is one more protocol that provides time synchronization supporting SV. These protocols operate on TCP/IP and native switched Ethernet networks existing as substation LANs to obtain the necessary response times below four milliseconds for protective relaying.

Focus in the webinar will be on an overview of these protocols and how they allow protective relaying installations to operate with far less copper wiring while improving safety with electrical isolation.

Digital Substation and IEC 61850 Standard

Biography:

David G. Williams, P.E. earned his B.A. in Physical Science from Asbury University in 2007 and completed his M.S.E.E. at The University of Kentucky in 2009 with emphasis in power systems. He has worked at FirstEnergy for 14 years and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio. David is the project lead for the IEC 61850 Digital Substation pilot laboratory at FirstEnergy. As a substation services engineer, regular duties include relay element testing support, commissioning, and misoperation investigation.  Irregular duties include RTDS simulations, power line carrier monitoring, and instructing internal training classes. In his free time, David enjoys going to church, vegetable gardening, and fixing things while trying to keep up with his three children.
