STEM.py, a 16-hour IEEE Try Engineering-funded Python Workshop Series, was organized by the IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section in collaboration with the IEEE Education Society and IEEE SB NIT Calicut. The workshop comprised six online sessions and one full-day offline session. The primary objective of the workshop was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Python programming and its applications in STEM fields.

The first session occurred on May 27th, 2023, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. It provided an introduction to Python programming, and IEEE, and highlighted the benefits of learning Python. The session also covered the installation process for Python. Mr. Ruben Abraham Sibu, the Industrial Relations Coordinator at IEEE Comsoc and Security Service Associate at Synopsis Inc., conducted the session.

The second and third sessions were held on May 28th and 29th, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. These sessions focused on the fundamentals of Python programming. Participants learned about IDEs like PyCharm, loops, conditional statements, functions, lists, tuples, dictionaries, error handling, file handling, and object-oriented programming. Mr. Harigovind M, an R&D Mentor at IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section and M.Eng student at the University of Windsor, Canada, facilitated these sessions. Continuation of the basics of Python sessions from the previous day, covering additional techniques in Python programming. The sessions were conducted on May 28th and 29th, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and were again led by Mr. Harigovind M.

The fourth session took place on June 1st, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. This session provided an in-depth introduction to the Pandas library and explored programming using the Pandas library. Mr. Abhinav Rajeev, a Junior Research Fellow at IIT Palakkad and Secretary of IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section conducted the session.

The fifth session was conducted on June 3rd, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. It covered the fundamentals of the Matplotlib library, including plots, charts, and visualization techniques using the Pandas library. The session was conducted by Mr. Solomon Staby, an Intern at Bosch and M.Tech AI student.

The sixth and final online session took place on June 8th, 2023, from 7:00 PM onwards. This session explored prompt engineering, different AI applications, and how AI can enhance programming. The session was handled by Mr. Ajai Sunny Joseph, Associate Technical Lead at Key Value Software Systems.

Participants were assessed through two tests based on the content covered in the sessions. The first test analyzed progress after the initial three sessions and was held on May 31st, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The second test, focusing on Pandas and Matplotlib libraries, took place on June 5th, 2023. Based on the performance in these tests, 30 participants were selected to attend the offline session.

The full-day offline session was conducted at NIT Calicut on June 10th, 2023, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. During this session, participants were divided into teams and provided with a mentor for each group. They worked on a project utilizing Python and its libraries, receiving guidance from their mentors. The projects undertaken by each team were analyzed, and winning teams were selected based on their performance. Participants received participation certificates, certificates for winning teams, and STEM kits. Mr. Abhinav Rajeev, Secretary of IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section handled the offline session.

The STEM.py, IEEE Try Engineering funded Python Workshop Series, organized by the IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section in collaboration with the IEEE Education Society and IEEE SB NIT Calicut, provided participants an extensive understanding of Python programming and its applications. Through online and offline sessions, participants learned the basics of Python, explored libraries like Pandas and Matplotlib, and engaged in hands-on projects. The workshop fostered skill development and provided a platform for participants to showcase their abilities. The event's success was evident through the active participation, learning outcomes, and recognition given to the winners.
