IEEE Kolkata Section organized Student Congress 2023 on the theme “Empowering Innovation: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice”. Participants from different student branches of IEEE Kolkata Section participated, interacted and showcased their activities in this one-day program. This event brought together Section Leaders, Esteemed Academicians, Industry Experts, Students and Branch Counselors of SB/SBCs of IEEE Kolkata Section. Beside that many young students also participated and interacted with the IEEE Student and Professional members. This event received more than 230 online registration from various engineering colleges and universities in eastern region states West Bengal, Assam and Tripura. Physical attendance count was around 150. More than 80 IEEE members volunteered and participated in this grand event of IEEE Kolkata Section. It was a gathering of intellectual minds and budding engineers. The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange, discussions, and recognition of Faces of SB/SBCs of IEEE Kolkata Section. The entire IEEE Kolkata Section SAC team under the leadership of Prof. Iti Saha Misra, Chair IEEE Kolkata Section indebted to each and every expert for their tremendous support and timely mentoring during this journey. The speakers were exceptionally great and the feedback received from the participants is extremely positive.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Iti Saha Misra, the Chair of IEEE Kolkata Section and a distinguished faculty member at Jadavpur University. Prof. Saha Misra set the tone for the day by emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts and innovation in shaping the future of technology.

This session featured esteemed speakers from renowned academic institutions and industry leaders. Prof. Sivaji Chakravorti, Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University and Senior IEEE Leader, delivered an insightful talk on How to do Experiments in a Structured Way. His profound words resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing the pressing need to follow a systematic approach for experiments. Prof. Debatosh Guha, Department of Radio Physics and Electronics, University of Calcutta and IEEE Fellow, delivered a captivating talk on Why not you? He shared valuable insights into research and technology.

The event also featured distinguished industry experts who shed light on the practical applications of technology in the corporate world. Mr. Sumit Goswami, Senior Director of Engineering, Qualcomm & Chair of Qualcomm India Academic Council and the Guest of Honor of the Student Congress 2023 delivered a talk on Fueling the Connected and Intelligent World. He shed light on the pivotal role played by AI in addressing different challenges of the modern world and its implications in the ongoing digital revolution. Ms. Sudeshna Choudhury, Director, Sustainability & Multi Cloud, Partner Ecosystems & Alliances, TCS and IEEE India Council Vice Chair for Women in Engineering (WIE), delivered a talk on Innovation for Sustainable Living. She provided valuable insights into the role of women in technology and sustainability in the corporate landscape. Prof. John Jose, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Guwahati, delivered an eloquent talk on Career Planning and Professional Growth through IEEE. He shared valuable insights and facilitated an engaging discussion by interacting with the participants.

An additional focal point of the congress was the compelling debate centering around 'Accountability in the Utilization of AI by Major Corporations.' This discourse ignited contemplative conversations regarding the ethical considerations associated with artificial intelligence and its conscientious implementation by leading corporate entities. Students hailing from various universities and institutes actively participated in this intellectually stimulating event. The debate culminated with the deserving winners being ceremoniously felicitated, receiving well-deserved prizes as tokens of recognition for their articulate and compelling arguments. The exchange not only celebrated the triumph of the winners but also facilitated a dynamic atmosphere that encouraged and elicited intelligent arguments from participants across all sides, contributing to a rich and diverse discourse.

The panel discussion that followed, moderated by Prof. John Jose, included industry experts such as Mr. Anand Raje from India Internet Foundation, Mr. Shaon Mazumder from IBM, Mr. Indrajit Sanyal from Ericson, and Mr. Biswajeet Saha from CDAC Kolkata. The panelists shared their expertise and diverse perspectives, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of tech and industry

Towards the end of the event, in the Faces of SB/SBCs of IEEE Kolkata Section different student branches showcased their work and contributions. This segment provided a platform for students to present their innovative projects and initiatives, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among aspiring engineers. The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony, where outstanding individuals and student branches were acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to the field of technology.

Seven distinct institutes actively participated in this session, sharing details about the various events and activities organized by their IEEE student branches. The gathering served as a platform for participants to connect, exchange greetings, and network with others engaged in similar developmental initiatives.

In summary, the IEEE Kolkata Section Student Congress 2023 proved to be a dynamic and enriching event, bringing together academia, industry, and students in a collaborative environment.
