Datathon 2023 was co-organized by the University of Peradeniya, the University of

Colombo School of Computing, the University of Moratuwa, and the University of Jaffna.

The event was organized through the collaboration of several key partners, including Lanka

Education and Research Network (LEARN), the host of APAN56, the Sri Lanka Association

for the Advancement of Science, and the IEEE Computer Society Sri Lanka Chapter.

Datathon also benefited from the invaluable contributions of three exceptional student

societies: the Hackers' Club of the University of Peradeniya, CompSoc of the University of

Colombo, and the ACM Student Chapter of the University of Moratuwa.

The event received sponsorship from Fortitude as the silver sponsor, along with Future

Labs, CodeGen, and KochaSoft as bronze sponsors. Additionally, Datathon was generously

supported by Hatch Works (Pvt) Ltd, who served as the ecosystem partner and provided

the event venue. Micro Rewards played a vital role as the digital certificate partner.

 

In the initial phase of event organization, invitations were sent to the following higher

Provided rules and regulations:

● The Datathon was a 24-hour event which started at 12.00 noon on 22nd August

2023 and ended at 12.00 noon on 23rd August 2023.

● Teams

o Each team comprised four members.

o The members were from a cohort of 3rd year students and above of the

institute.

● A panel of judges evaluated each solution based on the following criteria.

o Creativity, Innovativeness & Idea representation [30%]

o Usefulness & Practicality [20%]

o Efficiency [10%]

o Business value [20%]

o Completeness [20%]

● Teams were evaluated throughout the Datathon on 3 occasions. The following was

the initial evaluation plan (On the day of the event, the following counts were

adjusted to align with the number of participants in the event).

o First round evaluation - To select 20 of 40 teams

o Second round evaluation - To select 7 of 20 teams of round 1 + 3 wild card

teams (A wild card is a selection of a team from the teams that did not make

the shortlist)

o Third round evaluation - To select 4 of 10 teams of round 2 + 1 wild card

team

o The finalists were evaluated based on a 10 minute presentation and the

Champions, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up teams were selected.

● Prizes were awarded as follows.

o Champions Rs. 100,000.00

o 1st Runner-up Rs. 60,000.00

o 2nd Runner-up Rs. 40,000.00

● Certificates of participation were awarded to all participants.

● Team members were advised to be within the event premises from registration till

the end of the event.

● Team members were advised to only use their original ideas, codes, processes and

procedures for the datathon, and not to obtain third party help.

● Mentors only guided the teams and did not support the development of the

solution, data analytics or business insights in any manner.
