Seminar on Delay-Doppler Plane Modulation
The profound session on the promising communication technique of Delay-Doppler Modulation (DDM) was delivered by Dr. Shafie, which is designed to overcome the challenges associated with high-mobility communication scenarios. He discussed how embedding data in the Delay-Doppler (DD) plane could address Doppler challenges and dove into the practical implementation issues that persist, especially in transceiver design. He especially mentioned the ups and downs he faced during his postgraduate time in the related topic while doing his PhD.
The lecture was rich in content, covering the DDM fundamentals and highlighting the distinctive properties of the DD plane. Dr. Shafie also proposed how current 4G/5G wireless communication system transceivers could be adapted to leverage DDM technology. This spurred a lively question-and-answer segment, indicative of the high level of engagement from the attendees.
Dr. Suraweera, along with the students, participated actively, posing insightful questions that led to a dynamic exchange of ideas. Dr. Shafie’s comprehensive responses added depth to the participant's understanding of the subject matter. They opened the floor to discussions on the potential trajectories for the future of wireless communication systems.
As the seminar drew to a close, the IEEE Communications Society Student Branch extended heartfelt thanks to Dr. Shafie for his enlightening presentation and to all those present, especially Dr. Suraweera and the students of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, for their enthusiastic involvement and contributions to the session's success.
The seminar was a testament to the IEEE Communications Society Student Branch's commitment to academic excellence and its endeavour to provide platforms for learning and dialogue. The Branch looks forward to organizing further events that will continue to inspire and educate its members and the engineering community at large.

Dr. Akram Shafie
Delay-Doppler Plane Modulation for next generation wireless systems
Biography:
Dr. Akram received his Ph.D. degree in Engineering and Computer Science from the Australian National University, Australia, in 2023, and his B.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2017. As part of his PhD research, Akram delved into investigating terahertz band communication systems to support high-data-rate multiuser communication systems. He was the recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2022 IEEE Global Communications Conference (Globecom) and the author of the IEEE ComSoc Best Readings on terahertz communications. He is currently a Research Associate in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. His research interests include DD plane modulation, terahertz communications, and integrated sensing and communications.
