Yet another brief history of Operating Systems
A Brief History of Operating Systems
Date: November 5, 2024 | Time 18:00 CET (UTC+1)
Presenter: Christof Ullwer
The German Section of the Computer Society invites you to a talk on a brief historical overview of various computer operating systems. Some of these systems are almost forgotten, but in the talk, some of them will be revived with the help of a simulator.
Abstract:
This webinar explores the evolution of early computer operating systems, tracing the development from foundational systems like UNIX V1 and V7 through variants like BSD4.2/Ultrix, and exploring lesser-known systems such as Coherent, Plan9, and VMS versions 1.5 and 4.7. Christof Ullwer will provide a historical perspective on how these systems shaped the concepts of modern operating systems, including multi-user functionality, networking, and portability. Live demonstrations using simulators will give attendees a chance to see these systems in action, providing insights into their functionality and historical significance.
