The NASA Space Apps Challenge is the world’s largest annual global hackathon, bringing together coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, technologists, and innovators from around the globe. This year, Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan, is proud to host this prestigious event on October 5-6, 2024.

Yarmouk University successfully concluded the activities of the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024, held under the theme “Scientific Innovations in Space and Earth.” The event was fully organized and led by the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) Student Branch at Yarmouk University, reflecting the society’s commitment to advancing aerospace and electronic systems education among students.

Hosted by the Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology at the ZINC Hall in the Prince Al-Hussein Bin Abdullah II Building, the event was attended by the Dean, Dr. Mohammad Al-Zubaidi, and brought together students from various Jordanian universities to collaborate on solving real-world scientific challenges using NASA’s open data.

This initiative directly aligned with IEEE AESS core objectives, including promoting knowledge in aerospace, space systems, and advanced technologies, enhancing students’ technical and problem-solving skills, and building a strong, collaborative engineering community. Through this challenge, participants explored topics such as data analysis, artificial intelligence, and space-related applications, translating theoretical knowledge into practical solutions.

Dr. Al-Zubaidi emphasized the importance of such student-led initiatives in strengthening innovation and positioning Jordan within the global scientific and technological landscape. He praised the participants’ creativity and highlighted the role of the competition in discovering emerging talent and encouraging critical thinking in addressing global challenges.

The 2024 edition featured 20 diverse scientific and technical challenges related to space and Earth sciences. Participants worked in teams under expert mentorship and presented their solutions to a judging panel at the conclusion of the event.

The results were as follows:

  • First Place: Team YKpython (Yarmouk University) – Khaled Al-Tamimi and Yousef Hamdan
  • Second Place: Team Visioneera (German Jordanian University) – Karmel Al-Qawasmeh, Muhannad Khader, Layan Darwish, and Lynn Qabbani
  • Third Place: Team Moon (Hijjawi Faculty, Yarmouk University) – Rania Al-Rubaie and Saba Bilal

At the closing ceremony, awards and certificates were presented to the winning teams.

It is worth noting that the NASA Space Apps Challenge is the largest global hackathon, bringing together innovators, programmers, scientists, and students worldwide. At Yarmouk University, the event was not a standalone competition, but rather a strategic initiative implemented under the IEEE AESS framework, aiming to expand awareness of aerospace systems and inspire students to engage in space-related innovation.

The success of this event highlights the growing impact of IEEE AESS Yarmouk University, demonstrating how student-led efforts can effectively deliver high-impact activities that support both technical excellence and community development in alignment with AESS’s global mission.

The event was organized by a dedicated student team under AESS leadership, including Hassan Abu Sarris and Ryan Al-Aifan, reflecting strong leadership, teamwork, and commitment to advancing the society’s vision.
