Anshul Rao of MBA in Sustainability Management at IIM Lucknow

Topic:

Career Opportinities in Management

Key Points Discussed:

1. Career Planning:

  • Importance of Goal Setting: Anshul emphasized that career planning starts with understanding one's long-term goals. He encouraged students to identify their passions and interests early on, aligning them with career aspirations to stay motivated and focused.
  • Exploring Career Paths: He advised exploring various career paths and gaining exposure to different fields. This exploration could involve internships, part-time work, or participating in campus organizations, which help students discover their strengths and preferences.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Anshul pointed out that it’s essential to stay flexible, as career paths can evolve over time. He shared his journey from civil engineering to sustainability management as an example, illustrating that one’s career isn’t always linear and might include shifts based on emerging interests and opportunities.

2. Upskilling:

  • Continual Learning: Anshul highlighted the importance of continuously acquiring new skills to remain relevant. He mentioned that students should proactively seek courses, workshops, and certifications that align with their career goals.
  • Technical and Soft Skills: He stressed the importance of balancing technical skills with soft skills. For example, while students should have a solid foundation in technical areas like data analysis or project management, they should also cultivate soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership.
  • Leveraging Online Platforms: He recommended platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning, which offer numerous courses that students can use to acquire in-demand skills at their own pace. Anshul also shared his experiences using these resources to upskill during his own career transition.

3. Personal Branding:

  • Building an Online Presence: Anshul emphasized that building a strong online presence, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, is crucial for career development. He discussed the importance of keeping profiles updated with achievements, projects, and skills, making it easier for potential employers or collaborators to find relevant information.
  • Networking and Relationship Building: Anshul spoke about the value of connecting with professionals in the industry, alumni, and even classmates. He encouraged students to attend events, participate in online groups, and engage with others by commenting and sharing insightful content on LinkedIn.
  • Authenticity and Consistency: Finally, he underscored the need for authenticity. He advised students to be genuine in their online interactions and to share content that reflects their interests and values. Consistency, he mentioned, is key to reinforcing one's brand over time.

Q&A Session:

After his presentation, Anshul opened the floor for questions. Students asked about overcoming the challenges of switching career paths, maintaining motivation while upskilling, and the best ways to leverage LinkedIn for job searches. Anshul provided thoughtful answers, encouraging students to remain curious, persevere through challenges, and make the most of every learning opportunity.
