Abstract

The current world of entertainment has changed to online multimedia streaming services (e.g., Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, etc.) and massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) services. Based on this focus, this presentation introduces the core technologies used in multimedia streaming and XR services, which include extended reality (XR), mixed reality (MR), H.264, H.265, H.266, MPEG-DASH, content delivery network (CDN), as well as cloud and edge computing technologies. Examples of MMOG game system technologies and details of Netflix, Disney+, YouTube multimedia streaming services are introduced. This presentation is based on Dr. Chung’s recent industry and government projects, journal papers, and patents as well as his new book “Emerging Metaverse XR and Video Multimedia Technologies” published by Springer Nature, Apress ©2023 (ISBN 9781484289273, link).

Biography:

Jong-Moon Chung (IEEE Fellow & HKN) received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Yonsei University and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. Since 2005, he has been a professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, director of CNL, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, and professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine in the College of Medicine all at Yonsei University. From 1997 to 1999, he was an assistant professor and instructor at the Pennsylvania State University. From 2000 to 2005, he was with Oklahoma State University as a tenured associate professor and served as Director of the Oklahoma Communications, Networking, and Bioengineering lab. Currently he is a Vice President of the IEEE Consumer Technology Society (CTSoc) and the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society (PSES), Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, Section Editor of the Wiley ETRI Journal, Chair Editor-in-Chief of the KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems, and served as Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology from 2011 to 2021 (where more details can be found at link).
