Highly Inspiring Dr. Pete Wurman remote chat - Kiva Warehouse Robotics

Dr. Pete Wurman, the great inspiring technical co-founder of Kiva Systems, has an affinity with NCSU - he was also an associate Professor of Computer Science at NCSU.  Dr. Wurman has agreed to remotely do a brief informal casual chat session with our IEEE R&A members during the March 06, 2017.

At the start of the session, Mahesh will provide the high level technical architecture, positive aspects and inspirations of Kiva systems warehouse design.  This design - a simple and efficient distributed design with "out of box" design thought process involved - turned the pages of technological warehouse automation.

Around 7:30pm, we will do a video chat from NCSU with Dr. Wurman -  a technical co-founder of Kiva systems, who will inspire our with his gracious presence and motivate us with additional technical details and real experience around building Kiva systems.  Dr. Wurman has agreed to be present atleast for 15 minutes, followed by a brief Q&A session.

After the video chat, Mahesh will highlight a brief report on few other interesting industrial automation technologies and a few possible future presentations.

We will finish it up with members "show and tell" if any.

Speaker information:

Pete Wurman is best known for his work as a technical co-founder of Kiva Systems, the Boston-based company that pioneered the use of mobile robotics in warehouses and distribution facilities. Pete joined Kiva in 2004 with Raff D’Andrea to help founder Mick Mountz bring his vision to life. As CTO, Pete was responsible for the system architecture and decision-making algorithms. In May of 2012, Kiva was acquired by Amazon.com, and has subsequently deployed more than 30,000 robots to Amazon warehouses.

Prior to joining Kiva, Pete was an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC.  Pete’s teaching focus was e-commerce systems, and his research focused on electronic auctions (especially combinatorial auctions), multi-agent systems, and resource allocation.  Unfortunately, he never got to savor the fruits of earning tenure, as the Kiva opportunity had become too attractive and he moved his family to Boston.

Pete earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan in 1999, and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from M.I.T. in 1987.
