Overview

Rocket Recorder is a STEM program where students design, build, test, program, launch, and analyze a model rocket with an embedded data logger to evaluate rocket performance.

This STEM program is a multi-session hands-on educational course suitable for STEM camps, after school programs, science parks, scout groups, and other learning environments.  In this course, students learn the fundamentals of rocket science and explore the concepts with model rocket applications.  The practical exercises use model rockets as tools to allow students to experiment with rocket science and data logging using arduino microcontrollers. They learn to build rockets and arduino-based data loggers.  Additionally, students practice model rocketry testing in a safe and monitored environment. The course is suitable for 7-12 students and adults.  Participants build and instrument a  data-logging rocket from scratch, launch it multiple times to collect data, and analyze the results..

Students develop the technical skills of understanding rocket physics and arduino microcontrollers. They develop group work skills as all the hands-on activities are performed in small project teams. They learn manufacturing skills by building rockets and programming skills while programming an arduino. They learn interpersonal skills as they work with other groups to share resources to test model rockets. They learn how products are designed and how they can apply engineering skills in a career.

The class will be split into 3 project groups. Each project group will have 2 adult team captain volunteers, a rocket team (4 students), and a datalogger team (4 students). We will try to give students their preference to work on the rocket team or the datalogger team. The teams will work in parallel to complete the group project.

The curriculum is designed as a 5-session course. The events are broken into several focused segments, culminating in a session of rocket testing with multiple launches by each team.  Much of the event is held outdoors, and the outdoor segments may be weather-permitting.  Session themes are:

1)     Program introduction, technical fundamentals, architecture design and project team setup

2)     Design and Prep session (Rocket and Datalogger)

3)     Build and Test session (Rocket and Datalogger)

4)     Launch session (Rocket and Datalogger)

5)     Data analysis, results, final wrapup
