Industry and Academia collaboration: The hidden patterns!         

Time required to bring innovation from concept to commercialization could take five to twenty years. Therefore, innovation via industry-academia collaboration may have limited success because of several factors:

  •         Different objectives, scope, time scales of industry and academia do not match,
  •      Profit-oriented versus non-profit missions. Profits are industry priority.
  •   .  IP issues and publications. Difficult issue due to uncertainty and sharing return. Disclosure issues can cause problem in communication to broad group.

With the rise of AI/ML, the challenges are even greater. There is a gap between commercial software implementations, technical recommendations and standards. Academias are rarely exposed to real products. To address these potential issues, some actions are needed. Let us discuss these questions and share some best practices we have adopted in our collaboration with universities.

Biography:

Emmanuel Thepie Fapi is a Senior Data Scientist at Ericsson Canada, AI Hub Canada, Montreal. Prior to Ericsson, he worked as Software Developer with Amazon Lab126, QNX Software System Limited, GENBAND U.S. LLC, MDA Systems and Easy G. He holds a PhD from IMT Atlantique (formerly Ecole Nationale des Télécommunications de Bretagne) in signal processing and telecommunications in Brest, France. He also received a master’s degree in engineering mathematics and computer tools from Orleans University in France.

He won in 2021 the Ericsson Impact Award and in 2024 the Ericsson Key Contributor Award. He is now leading Cognitive AI Applied AI Research cluster. From 2020 to 2023 he led the Edge Computing Applied AI Research cluster.

His research interests are 5G Networks and Beyond, Distributed AI/ML, Edge Computing, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Sustainable AI, Trustworthy AI, Non-Terrestrial Networks, Zero-Trust Architecture, Embedded Systems, and Advanced Digital Signal Processing.
