Fostering Impactful Industry Academia Collaborations: The Journey of SODA ABR Algorithm
 
In this talk, we will present a recently published work, in collaboration with UMass Amherst and Caltech, on developing a performant Adaptive Bitrate algorithm called SODA which delivers high quality of experience while providing performance guarantees. We will also delve in to the backstory behind this collaboration and finally, touch upon how academics and students can engage with Prime Video Science through collaborations and other open opportunities.

Dr. Zahaib Akhtar

Biography:

Zahaib Akhtar is a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon Prime Video and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Computer Science at NCSU. At Amazon Prime Video he has built award winning systems which combine server and client-side optimization techniques to deliver high quality customer experience for millions of Live and On-demand video streams every day. His works leverages emergent ML/AI techniques to reason about performance at scale and drive continuous improvements for Prime Video customers. Prior to Amazon, he obtained his PhD in Computer Science from USC in 2019.

Dr. Natalie Strobach

Biography:

Natalie Strobach is a Senior Program Manager for Research Programs at Amazon Prime Video, driving innovation and partnerships in AI, machine learning, and cutting-edge technologies. With a Ph.D. from UC Davis and a decade of experience as an academic dean and research leader, she has secured over $10 million in funding for STEM, social sciences, and humanities initiatives. Natalie oversees Prime Video’s global research collaborations, publication processes, and engagement with industry standards, blending strategic financial management with a commitment to fostering diversity in research and education.
