The IEEE ComSoc Chapter of Gujarat Section is proud to present the second talk in its webinar series on Quantum Communication. This insightful session, titled "Quantum Secured Communication Systems & Applications", will explore the transformative potential of quantum communication technology and its implications for secure global communications.

The expert speaker for this event is Shri Adarsh Jain, Head, Quantum systems & technology Division, SAC,ISRO

Talk Summary:
Quantum communication leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to offer unparalleled security, making it an ideal solution for secure data transmission. In this talk, Shri Adarsh Jain will focus on the system engineering aspects of satellite-based quantum communication, emphasizing the role of satellites in enabling long-range global Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). Unlike fiber-optic and terrestrial free-space QKD, which are constrained by distance limitations due to fiber absorption or atmospheric losses, satellite-based QKD provides a viable solution for distributing secure keys over thousands of kilometers, making it suitable for global coverage.

The session will cover key topics, including:

  • Single and entangled photon-based QKD protocols
  • Space and ground segments of satellite-based QKD systems
  • Integrated QKD networks and international developments
  • Challenges in implementation and potential applications

This talk will also provide a deep dive into the practical challenges and future prospects of satellite-based quantum communication systems, offering valuable insights into their applications in various sectors, including cybersecurity, defense, and communications.

We invite all members and interested participants to join us for an engaging discussion on the future of secure communication technology.

Sh. Adarsh Jain of SAC, ISRO

Topic:

Quantum Secured Communication Systems & Applications

Biography:

Shri Adarsh Jain joined ISRO in 2007 after graduating in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He completed his post-graduation in Telecommunications from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in 2013.

In his early days at SAC, Ahmedabad, he worked on the design, development, and delivery of driver amplifiers and linearizers for various SATCOM and navigation payloads, such as the GSAT series and IRNSS. Later, he led the development of several new technologies for optical and microwave photonics systems, including optical transmitters, photonic multipliers, photonic mixers, and more. He also initiated the development of quantum communication technologies at SAC.

In early 2021, his team successfully demonstrated India's first NavIC-synchronized, fully automated free-space QKD system between two buildings, along with quantum-secured video calling. His areas of expertise include optical communication, microwave photonics, and quantum communication technologies.

Currently, he is heading the Quantum Systems and Technology Division (QSTD) at SAC, focusing on the development of state-of-the-art quantum technologies for demonstrating satellite-based QKD between Indian ground stations. As an Associate Project Director (APD) for the opto-quantum communication payload for the SAQTI satellite, he leads the team in the design and development of a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite-based QKD payload.
