Standby Power Switching, Paralleling, & Isolation Equipment - ASCO
PES / IAS / LM Joint Meeting
Transfer Switch 101:
Transfer Switch Fundamentals – This session will focus on Transfer Switches, understanding their purpose in the electrical system. We will explore the elements of a transfer switch and a bypass isolation transfer switch along with the different methods of transferring between sources and their strengths and weaknesses in specific applications. Code compliance is critical so we will explore the codes and standards that reference transfer switches.
Power Control Systems:
Paralleling Switchgear Design Basics – This session will focus on Generator synchronizing switchgear controls and System Master Controls in emergency power and closed transition modes of operation. We will address priority load controls to ensure that essential facility loads are connected when emergency power is necessary. We’ll also cover Applicable UL, ANSI and Seismic standards.
Source Isolation Switching/New Energy Landscape:
As technology continues to mature and the need for uninterrupted power becomes increasingly critical, the standby power landscape is evolving beyond traditional generators. Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are now assuming multiple roles in these systems, prompting a reevaluation of how they can be effectively deployed to ensure operational reliability and compliance with codes and standards in resilience applications. This session will delve into the evolving market dynamics, changing codes, and emerging architectures that facilitate the integration of DERs for backup power, even within critical standby systems.
