Topic:

From the European Space Agency to Skydance, the "Spanish Pixar"

I have always had a great passion for video games and computer-animated movies. It was when I saw Toy Story that I realized I wanted to dedicate myself to computer graphics in one way or another. I started by studying Computer Engineering, as it was the closest field related to making video games or animated films. After finishing my degree, I began working at Deimos Space, developing software for satellites, and from there, I spent almost two years working at the European Space Agency.

Upon returning, I saw that a new Master's program in video games had just been created, and I decided to leave everything behind to study what I had always wanted. As a natural continuation, I pursued a Ph.D. in physics-based simulation and haptic rendering. I spent some time as a CTO at a small startup in Madrid before finally joining Ilion Animation Studios—now Skydance Animation Madrid—where I currently work.

Making an animated film requires extensive resources, time, and highly skilled personnel across the various departments that make up the company. First, there are the Pre-Production departments, which mainly include Art, Script, and Storyboarding. Then, during the Production phase, we have departments for Modeling, Texturing, Layout, Character Effects, Rigging, Animation, Special Effects, and Lighting. Finally, in the Post-Production phase, we have the departments of Compositing and Color Correction.

None of this would be possible in large productions without a Pipeline, essentially, the set of software and tools, both commercial and in-house, that enables the workflow for artists in each department. The Pipeline also facilitates the transfer of work from one department to the next, the rendering of each frame of the movie, and review sessions with supervisors or directors.

Biography:

I have completed a Master in Special Effects (FX) with Houdini in Lightbox Academy, which is a Houdini Certified School. Before, I have completed a Master in Visual Effects (VFX) with NukeX and a Master in 3D Modeling with Maya, also in Lightbox Academy. I have also completed a course in Tools Development for Maya during this time.

In 2015 I received a PhD in Computer Science, in the field of Physically-based Simulation and Haptic Rendering, under the advice of Prof. Miguel A. Otaduy. My PhD. Thesis is titled SKIN SIMULATION MODELS FOR TACTILE RENDERING.

Previously, in 2010 I obtained my Master in Computer Graphics, Videogames and Virtual Reality, from the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) and my Degree in Computer Science Engineering, from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). This is a 5-year Engineering, equivalent to a Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) plus a Master of Computer Science (MCS).

Between 2003 and 2008, I worked as Project Engineer at Deimos Space S.L.. During this period, between 2005 and 2007, I worked at the European Space Agency (ESA), in the European Space Research Institute (ESRIN). Between 2008 and 2012, I worked as Teaching Assistant at the URJC, in the Computer Science Engineering Degree. Between 2012 and 2016, I worked as Researcher at the URJC. Between 2016 and 2018, I worked in a small startup as Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Since 2019, I am working at Ilion Animation Studios, now Skydance Animation Madrid, as Senior Houdini FX Technical Director.
