Field Visit to Healthcare Lab, BITS Pilani K.K. Birla Goa Campus
The Educational Visit to BITS Pilani, K.K. Birla Goa Campus, organized by the IEEE EMBS MIT-ADT Student Branch Chapter in association with IEEE Pune Section on March 21, 2025, provided students with an immersive learning experience in cognitive neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and brain-computer interfaces.
The visit commenced with an introduction to the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab, where students explored Electroencephalography (EEG) technology. They learned about EEG data collection, preprocessing techniques like bandpass filtering and Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and feature extraction methods. The discussion emphasized how EEG technology is used in brain-computer interfaces (BCI), neurofeedback training, and mental health diagnostics.
Following this, Niharika Tewari, a neuroscientist, presented her research on dementia detection using virtual reality (VR) and mobile-based cognitive tests. She explained how VR simulations, such as navigation tasks, memory tests, and shopping simulations, help assess cognitive decline. She also introduced EEG-based graph theory metrics, which are utilized for early-stage dementia diagnosis.
Ranjith Jaganathan conducted a hands-on session on eye-tracking technology, where students observed real-time gaze tracking and its applications in virtual reality, marketing, and medical diagnostics.
The next segment of the visit involved an exploration of the iBrain Lab, where researchers demonstrated the role of AI in cognitive development. Hema Nawani, a neuroscientist research associate, presented her study on dementia risk assessment, emphasizing non-genetic factors such as lifestyle, environmental influences, and chronic illnesses. She discussed biomarker-based early detection and AI-driven speech and facial analysis for cognitive health assessment.
Soumya Tripathi, a PhD student, introduced a study comparing AI-driven learning tools versus traditional educational methods. She showcased the use of Morrie, a language model built on GPT frameworks, to analyze learning efficiency using AI-driven mind-mapping and comprehension retention techniques.
A group discussion followed, where students from MIT ADT University and BITS Pilani engaged with faculty and researchers. The discussion covered career prospects in neuroscience and AI, research opportunities, and potential collaborations between the two institutions.
The visit concluded with the felicitation of Prof. Veeky Baths by Dr. Reena Pagare, recognizing his contributions to neuroscience research and education.
This educational visit provided valuable practical exposure to EEG technology, AI applications in neuroscience, and emerging research trends, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to brain-computer interfaces, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence.
