Please join us for a technical seminar by Dr. Alycen Wiacek on Medical Acoustics for Global Health, Imaging, and Clinical Translation at Wayne State University.

Abstract:

Ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging are two related medical imaging modalities that transmit sound and light, respectively, into the body and measure signals representing the acoustic response from tissue. Due to their potential to be both noninvasive and portable, these acoustic-based imaging modalities hold significant promise for diagnosis in resource limited settings. However, engineering quantitative tools rather than requiring manual image interpretation is critical to aid the transition of these methods into the clinic. In this talk, I will highlight the work being done in the Medical Acoustics for Global Health, Imaging, and Clinical Translation (MAGIC) Lab at Oakland University, developing quantitative tools to improve the quality and availability of ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Specifically, I will highlight three main innovations including: (1) leveraging physics-informed deep learning to diagnose breast cancer, (2) quantifying portable ultrasound to guide physical therapy treatment, and (3) developing quantitative photoacoustic-based biomarkers to characterize thrombosis.
