An Overview of Projects and Activities in IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee

Paul Nikolich

IEEE Life Fellow, Former Chairman of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee

About the Talk

This talk provides an overview of current projects and initiatives within the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee. It highlights ongoing work on high-speed optical interfaces aimed at advancing Ethernet technologies, as well as new developments in wireless LAN standards to support evolving connectivity demands. Attendees will gain insights into the latest trends, technical directions, and collaborative efforts shaping the future of wired and wireless networking under the IEEE 802 umbrella.

About the Speaker

Paul Nikolich served as Chairman of the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee from 2001 to 2024, providing oversight over thousands of dedicated participants completing hundreds of ratified IEEE 802 standards in wired and wireless communications networking, most taking several years to complete. He played a key role in developing broadband access standards, including the IEEE 802 LMSC and DOCSIS Cable Modem standards families, which have revolutionized global connectivity. These standards created vast opportunities, enabling employment of millions in the networking industry, and connecting billions to the Internet. All told, the economic impact of these technologies well exceeds $1 trillion annually. As a successful company founder and angel investor, Paul invented, funded and delivered new products and services that leveraged these many networking standards. Paul is the winner of the 2025 IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award.

An IEEE Life Fellow, Nikolich is the Owner of Nikolich Advisors, LLC based in Essex Fells, New Jersey, USA.
