Nuclear Power in Canada is it a Blessing or a Curse in Facilitating an Energy Transition?
This is a joint meeting of Canadian Society of Senior Engineers and IEEE Life Members Affinity Groups.
This series of presentations has been occurring for more than 20 years and is now being also advertised to the IEEE Northern Canada Section (NCS) Life Members Affinity Group (LMAG) through vTools and other IEEE LMAG's and IEEE members depending upon the topic. At the same time the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (CSSE) is using their national organization to provide information, the subject and speaker to members across Canada.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The meeting will open at 12:30 pm MDT (2:30pm Eastern), with the presentation starting at 12:45 (2:45 pm EDT). The meeting will be held via the Zoom platform with the actual invitations sent the afternoon of Wednesday, April 16. Summary: Nuclear power is the second-largest source of low carbon energy used today to produce electricity, following hydropower. Progress on nuclear power technologies continues. It has led to innovative, advanced and next generation reactor designs that are likely helping to make nuclear power a more efficient, affordable and attractive option for decarbonization. In setting the table let’s think about what’s next for nuclear in Canada and Alberta.
Bio: Bob Emmott is the President and Chief Executive Officer at Maxim Power Corporation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the UK a Post Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Engineering from the UK and a Master of Laws from the Osgoode Law School. Mr. Emmott began his operations management and engineering career serving in the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet. This was followed by well over a decade working for Alstom Power in the UK, designing, building and commissioning several large coal and gas-fired power plants in the UK, Canada, USA and Asia. Emigrating to Canada in 2000, Mr. Emmott completed thirteen years with TransAlta Corporation, leading Technical Services and serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Engineer. As a consultant, Mr. Emmott has taken a leading role delivering several strategic electric power industry company initiatives in the USA, Canada and Australia. Mr. Emmott joined MAXIM in November 2018 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and was appointed to President and Chief Executive Officer January 1, 2024.
