The potential size of the CO2 Direct Air Capture Market and Deep Sky's Role
This is a joint meeting of Canadian Society of Senior Engineers and IEEE Life Members Affinity Groups.
This series of presentations has been occurring for more than 20 years and is now being also advertised to the IEEE Northern Canada Section (NCS) Life Members Affinity Group (LMAG) through vTools and other IEEE LMAG's and IEEE members depending upon the topic. At the same time the Canadian Society of Senior Engineers (CSSE) is using their national organization to provide information, the subject and speaker to members across Canada.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025. The meeting will open at 12:30 pm MDT (2:30pm Eastern), with the presentation starting at 12:45 (2:45 pm EDT). The meeting will be held via the Zoom platform with the actual invitations sent the afternoon of Wednesday, May 14. If you plan to attend and be included on the Zoom invite for this meeting please respond to Tom Madsen, tcmadsen@telus.net, before noon on Wednesday, May 14.
Please note the meeting originates in Alberta which is in the Mountain Time Zone, so if you are in another province you must account any necessary time shift.
Title: The potential size of the CO2 Direct Air Capture Market and Deep Sky's Role
Presenter: Leon Suterland, Director of Design Engineering at Deep Sky
Summary: The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) industry involves removing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere to lower atmospheric CO2 levels and offset emissions from hard to abate industries. CDR will play an important role in addition to deep emissions reductions to stay under the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C global warming target. Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) is a specific form of CDR that captures CO2 from the air and stores it permanently underground.
Deep Sky is a Canadian company developing DACCS projects in Canada. Deep Sky's Alpha facility in Innisfail, Alberta will be online in 2025 and be a world first "technology agnostic" facility to test many DAC technologies at scale.
Bio: Leon Suterland is an experienced engineer with more than 15 years of experience designing and fabricating power, gas processing, gas compression, and refrigeration facilities. In his role as Director of Design Engineering at Deep Sky he integrates energy, storage, and process requirements into facility design as well as working with DAC technology partners to scale up their designs to commercial scale. He has a track record of delivering safe, cost-saving systems with expertise in facility process design, HAZOP, and Front End Engineering Design. Previously, he worked at Plasco Energy Group (now Omni Conversion Technologies), Startec Compression and Process, and Convrg Innovations.
