IEEE PES ESPAÑA | [Webinar 13.06.2025] | THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ENERGY | Utility-scale and distributed batteries in renewables-dominated power systems: experiences and lessons learnt from Australia
Estimados Miembros del Capítulo IEEE PES ESPAÑA y de la comunidad de sistemas eléctricos de potencia,
Dear IEEE PES Spain Members and Colleagues from power and energy community,
Continuing with the [Webinar] series on the topic
LA TRANSICIÓN ENERGETICA | Hacia una ECONOMIA DESCARBONIZADA
THE ENERGY TRANSITION | Towards a DECARBONIZED ECONOMY
The energy transition towards a decarbonized economy will present a relevant challenge and a crucial transformation faced by our Society; Decelerating climate change effects is becoming a moral commitment.
As a society, we are part of the decarbonized energy process that goes through the electrification of the economy and it is supported by renewables within a sustainable energy model.
This means a change of paradigm which heads towards an immediate exciting future full of challenges at all levels associated with flexibility in its widest conception. It is assumed that a change of paradigm, that requires changing the focus from active based asset management towards the digitalization that ensures resiliency and security for the future electric systems.
In this context, we need to contribute and stimulate the exchange of ideas from different perspectives and experiences, creating a framework of reflection through these series of webinars. The expected benefit and impact is the identification of opportunities within the complexity associated with the change of paradigm.
En este webinar, Pierluigi Mancarella (The University of Melbourne) nos hablará sobre la experiencia australiana en la operación de sistemas de energía eléctrica con muy elevada penetración de renovables.
Título: Utility-scale and distributed batteries in renewables-dominated power systems: experiences and lessons learnt from Australia
Contenido: Australia features ultra-high penetration and impressive rates of growth of variable renewable energy (VRE) sources and distributed energy resources (DER) that are Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs). This has led to issues associated with system flexibility, DER visibility, low-inertia system operation and frequency stability, weak networks and voltage instability, converter-driven instability, and so forth, being witnessed and effectively managed basically daily. In particular, battery energy storage systems (BESS) of different sizes and applications, ranging from utility-scale (order of 100 MW) to community batteries (order of MW) to household-level batteries (order of kW) are penetrating the Australian market to provide system security, reliability and resilience services as well as exploit market opportunities due to highly volatile energy and ancillary services prices in a renewables-dominated system.
In this lecture, based on real-world experiences and ongoing research projects in Australia, we will present how BESS are increasingly being deployed at different scales as effective technologies to manage the challenges of a renewables-dominated grid and market.

Utility-scale and distributed batteries in renewables-dominated power systems: experiences and lessons from Australia
Biography:
Pierluigi Mancarella is the Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at The University of Melbourne (Australia) and part-time Professor of Smart Energy Systems at The University of Manchester (UK). His key research interests include grid and market integration of renewables and distributed energy resources, energy infrastructure planning under uncertainty, techno-economic modelling and analysis of multi-energy systems, and security, reliability and resilience of low-carbon networks.
Pierluigi obtained the PhD degree in Electrical Energy Systems from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, was a Research Associate at Imperial College London, UK, and held visiting research positions at Sintef/NTNU in Norway and at NREL in Colorado, as well as visiting professorships at Ecole Centrale de Lille in France, the Universidad de Chile, Tsinghua University in China, and DTU in Denmark.
Pierluigi is an author of several books and book chapters and over 400 research papers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, an IEEE Power and Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer, a Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the past Chair of the Energy Working Group of the IEEE European Public Policy Initiative, the Convenor of the Cigre Working Group C6/C2.34 “Flexibility provision from distributed energy resources”, the lead of the “Regulatory Framework” Task of the Cigre Working Group C4.47 “Power system resilience”, and the Technical Chair of the 2022 International Symposium on Microgrids. Currently, he is the Australian Director of the USA-UK-Australia Global Centre in Climate Change and Clean Energy “Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-Free Society (EPICS)”.
Pierluigi is the recipient of a 2018 International Newton Prize for his research work on power system resilience, led the technical studies for the Australian Chief Scientist’s “Finkel Review” into the security of the future National Electricity Market (NEM) following the 2016 blackout in Australia, and over the past few years has assisted the Australian system operator and regulators in designing technical and market mechanisms to enhance power system security, reliability and resilience.
