The Vision for Digital Substations at Southern Company
Brief description of program:
The topic of IEC-61850 based digital substations has become an area of great consideration across the utility industry over the past few years. This presentation will provide an overview of the Southern Company Research & Development team’s vision of incorporating this technology across our system, the benefits that this technology and our approach can provide, and milestones we have met thus far in making this vision a reality.

The Vision for Digital Substations at Southern Company
Guest Speaker’s Bio- Jonathan Doroh currently serves as a Principal Engineer in the Southern Research, Environmental and Sustainability organization, where his primary responsibilities include substation research in the areas of digital substation design and implementation, electromagnetic pulse mitigation, and evaluation of various new technologies for substation equipment.
Jonathan began his career with Alabama Power in 2005 as test engineer in the Protection and Control Field Services (PCFS) department where he performed extensive field testing and commissioning of major power equipment and protective systems within substations. In 2012, Jonathan was promoted to a Team Leader position within the PCFS department where he inspected and supervised work at multiple capital and maintenance projects to ensure they were completed in a safe and reliable manner. Jonathan was promoted to a Principal Engineer position in the PCFS department in 2015 where he reviewed test documents for major substation projects, reviewed and wrote substation operating procedures and other department guidance, and served on several working groups to represent the organization. In 2022, Jonathan joined the SCS Research & Development to primarily focus on digital substation research and demonstration efforts.
Jonathan has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University, a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and is a licensed PE in the state of Alabama. Jonathan and his wife, Melissa, have three children, Caleb (13), Jacob (9), and Hannah (7) and reside in Hoover, AL.
