SusTech Talk August 2025 – Using metrics for improved sustainability forecasting
SusTech Talk August 2025 – Using metrics for improved sustainability forecasting
“Using metrics for improved sustainability forecasting”
with Ronald Hasenberger, Bell Labs Consulting (Nokia), Vienna, Austria
Date/Time: Wednesday, August 27, 11am-Noon Pacific Time (8pm CET)
Metrics can be used not only for capturing the current state of a system but also to help to improve quantitative forecasting. Many of the initiatives and technologies that are suitable to help the planet will be long running and require perseverance to complete as well as verification of their effectiveness, direction and expected future progress. Metrics can be used to take an inventory of current achievements and give an indication on the expected future trajectory, i.e. forecast what is still to come.
This talk will demonstrate how lagging and leading metrics can be used to provide valuable information on progress achieved in sustainability projects as well as expectation for future progress, helping to keep motivation for continuation high.

Using metrics for improved sustainability forecasting
Incorporation of semi-quantitative and qualitative metrics, use of statistics/AI for metric selection, structuring metrics, and tracking progress using metrics will be discussed, as well as limitations of these techniques. Examples such as a city with multiple sustainability goals to track (e.g, for transportation: multiple touchpoints within a 15-minute walking distance, increased use of public transportation, reducing the impact of travel in individual vehicles) or a hierarchy of metrics that can be applied to global warming will be considered.
Biography:
Ronald Hasenberger is Principal Consultant at Bell Labs Consulting (Nokia) in Vienna, Austria, helping its customers to improve the operations of communications networks. This involves a great deal of work defining metrics, finding reference values from industry and interpreting differences. Ronald has also helped to set up and operate several benchmarking exercises from the definition of metrics to be used gathering the metrics and deriving insights from raw data. He has been an active contributor to the Metrics and Indicators committee of IEEE Planet Positive 2030, providing insight into the way technologies like Internet of Things (IOT), digital twins and machine learning contribute to the development of useful metrics and indicators.
