The convergence of information technology and operational technology in cyber-physical systems (CPSs) has led to highly interconnected and autonomous systems. However, this integration also introduces new attack vectors, posing significant risks to social, economic, and business sectors. Securing CPSs requires evaluating both system functionality and security without disrupting ongoing operations. A promising approach to enhancing CPS security is the use of digital twins. In this talk, I will explore how digital twins can serve as security enablers for CPSs. I will also discuss the security challenges of digital twins, highlighting potential abuse cases and presenting countermeasures to mitigate risks posed by malicious digital twins.

Biography:

Dr. Sabah Suhail is a Research Fellow at The Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT), Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), UK. Her research focuses on the security and privacy of cyber-physical systems, digital twins, and blockchain. At QUB, she actively contributes to digital twin-related projects, including Digital Twins for Cyber-Physical Systems Cybersecurity (DTCyber) under the North-South Research Programme (NSRP) and ReImagining Supply Chains Network Plus (RiSC+), funded by UKRI. Beyond QUB, she is engaged in cybersecurity and digital twin initiatives across the UK, serving as an expert fellow of the SPRITE+ and a member of the Digital Twin Hub. Her professional experience spans the UK, Europe, and Asia.
