TOUR OF THE ZEELAND BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS (BPW)

WASHINGTON AVE POWER PLANT

ALL MEMBERS OF THE IEEE WMS, THE WEST MICHIGAN
CONSULTANTS NETWORK, AND THEIR GUESTS ARE INVITED TO
TOUR THE ZEELAND BPW WASHINGTON AVE POWER PLANT
SPONSORED BY THE IEEE WMS LIFE MEMBER AFFINITY GROUP

(This tour was originally scheduled for June 25, 2025, but was cancelled due to the
extreme heat West Michigan was experiencing at that time and the resulting high
demand for power they had to deal with).

LOCATION
The power plant is located at 347 E. Washington Ave., Zeeland MI 49464.

Parking
Tour attendees are encouraged to carpool where possible due to limited parking in the
area. Our tour guide will send us instructions on where to park and where to meet for
the tour prior to the tour date. When we receive those instructions, we will send them to
you in either another eNotice, or directly to the email addresses of those signed up to
attend.

Tour
We are limited to 20 visitors. Each active IEEE or WMCN member signing up for the
tour may also sign up one or two non-IEEE/WMCN guests. Guests must be at least 14
years old.
The tour begins at 10:00 AM. It is anticipated that we will meet at 350 E. Washington
Ave, which is their office located across the street from the power plant. The exact
meeting location will be announced later as noted above. Plan to arrive between 9:45
and 10:00 AM.

Clothing & Footwear Restrictions

Full length pants and secure footwear are required. No shorts, no flip-flops. Attire is
otherwise casual.
Optional Lunch
After the tour, those interested will meet for lunch at Frank’s Restaurant located at 134
E. Main Ave in Zeeland. IEEE and WMCN member’s lunch will be paid for by our WMS.
Member guests will be expected to pay for their own lunch.
ZEELAND BPW WASHINGTON AVE POWER PLANT FAQs
The facility we will tour is operated by the city of Zeeland. It was built in 1935 and
upgraded during the 1950’s through the 1980’s. They currently have 7 internal
combustion generating units with capacities ranging from 1 to 6 Megawatts. Total
capacity is 24 Megawatts. The power units can use both natural gas (primary) and
diesel (secondary). The facility is a “peaking” facility in that it is only placed online when
the demand for electricity exceeds the 930 Megawatt capacity of the nearby Consumers
Energy Generating Plant on N. Fairview Rd in Zeeland.
