General Overview:

To enhance PES visibility and foster collaboration, IEEE PES SBC MACE, in association with the IEEE IE/PELS Jt. Chapter MACE and the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, organized AMPOWER – A Project Expo Competition on Mission Net Zero 2070 on 18 October 2025 at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam. The expo provided a platform for students to showcase innovative projects focused on sustainability and India’s Mission Net Zero 2070 goals. Over 15 teams and 40 participants presented prototypes in areas such as renewable energy, smart power systems, waste management, and other carbon-neutral technologies. A panel of faculty and industry professionals evaluated the projects, recognizing the best teams for creativity, technical excellence, and societal impact. This initiative aimed to introduce students to IEEE Power and Energy society, strengthen local chapter engagement, and offer practical exposure to emerging trends in power and energy systems. Many young students were brought as viewers for the event to help them ideate and build such innovative and impactful projects in the coming future and collaborate more with IEEE PES Society.

Detailed Description:

AMPOWER was conceptualized as a student project expo aimed at showcasing sustainable and energy-efficient innovations that align with India’s commitment to Mission Net Zero 2070. The initiative provided a platform for students to translate their ideas into tangible prototypes, fostering creativity and technical skill while addressing real-world energy and environmental challenges.

Goal : To promote interdisciplinary innovation focused on renewable energy, carbon neutrality, and sustainable technologies.

The planning process began several weeks prior to the event, involving close coordination between IEEE PES SBC MACE, IEEE IE/PELS Jt. Chapter MACE, and the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter. IEEE PES SBC MACE team managed all logistics, invitations, and promotional activities. The event was advertised through social media campaigns, college circulars, and the IEEE Kerala Section network to ensure wide participation. Participation from almost 20 different colleges were ensured. From a total of 40 applications, 15 teams were selected to participate for the final event, i.e, the Project exhibition.

AMPOWER was held on 18th October 2025 at the MACE campus and featured multiple project stalls. Each team presented their prototype before judges and attendees, covering innovations in areas such as solar optimization, electric mobility, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable resource management. The judging panel comprised faculty members and professionals from the energy sector, who evaluated the projects on creativity, technical merit, and its relevance in today’s scenario. Many young minds new to the engineering field were invited to be viewers for the expo where they were taught about each project and their underlying mechanism in detail. A total of 110 students participated as viewers for the event and 15 projects were exhibited by almost 40 participants.

In addition to the project presentations, a Membership Development Session was conducted by Jes Gigo, Kochi Hub MDC and  Chair of IEEE PES SBC MACE. The session highlighted the benefits of IEEE PES membership and encouraged students to actively engage with global professional communities in the energy domain. Engr.Harikumar V.P ,vice-chair,IEEE PES Kerala chapter also shared his views regarding the effectiveness of the event in bringing up young minds to proactively contribute for a sustainable tomorrow.

The event concluded with remarks from dignitaries from the college administration, and top-performing teams were recognized and awarded. The event successfully provided students with hands-on exposure to emerging trends in the energy sector. The viewers were also encouraged to ideate and put up projects for the upcoming competitions.

Outcomes & Impact:

The expo significantly enhanced awareness about sustainable technologies among participants and visitors. Students gained valuable experience in presenting their work to technical experts and peers, strengthening their communication and project management skills. A new vision regarding a sustainable tomorrow was fostered in the minds of the participants, viewers and volunteers.

The event marked the first-ever collaboration between IEEE PES SBC MACE and the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, organized in association with the IEEE IE/PELS Jt. Chapter MACE. This partnership greatly contributed to the participation strength and reach of the program. The presence of the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter Vice Chair, who interacted with the participants and appreciated their efforts, added immense value to the event.

As a direct outcome, IEEE PES SBC MACE membership increased from 39(at the time of MDI event approval) to 80 members and still increasing, reflecting the heightened enthusiasm and engagement of students. Volunteer participation within PES also saw a notable rise, with several new members actively involved in organizing and managing the event.

Through AMPOWER, IEEE PES SBC MACE furthered its mission of nurturing young engineers committed to sustainability and clean energy solutions, while building a stronger and more collaborative PES community at MACE.
