The STEM Workshop — “IoT Ignite: Spark the Future,” sponsored by the IEEE TryEngineering STEM Grant and organized by the IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter was held at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering (SCTCE), Thiruvananthapuram on 19th & 20th October 2025.

This two-day hands-on STEM workshop was designed to introduce school students to the fundamentals of the Internet of Things (IoT) and communication technologies by engaging them in hands-on Arduino based projects. These projects demonstrated how sensors can be used for data collection and how that data can be shared through different communication technologies.

This initiative, conducted by volunteers from the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Kerala Chapter with support from the IEEE TryEngineering STEM Grant, aimed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills among pre-university students, particularly from underserved communities.

A total of 40 students from grades 8 and 9 of Govt. Model Higher Secondary School, Punnamoodu and Govt. High School, Pappanamcode and 3 accompanying teachers participated actively, experimenting with IoT setups and learning how smart devices communicate and operate collaboratively. 10 active volunteers from IEEE ComSoc KC, IEEE SCT SB & IEEE ComSoc SCT SBC were also actively engaged in helping students in building IoT prototypes

Key activities included:

  • Interactive sessions on IoT fundamentals, communication principles, and Arduino programming.
  • Hands-on experiments involving sensors, actuators, and wireless communication.
  • Student-built IoT prototype projects such as:
    Morse Code Translator
    Wireless Messaging System
    Weather Monitoring Station
    Smart Traffic Light
  • Conducted pre and post-assessment tests to evaluate learning outcomes.
  • Feedback and reflection sessions to encourage STEM engagement and teamwork.

The workshop also aligned with TryEngineering’s hands-on learning approach, utilizing IEEE educational resources such as “Internet of Things (IoT)” and “IoT with a Soft Touch”.

Printed training course material and Arduino kits were handed over to teachers from both schools for continued STEM learning.

The effectiveness of the program was measured using quantitative assessments from students and qualitative feedback from participants and teachers.

·       Students completed pre-assessment and post-assessment tests to gauge their understanding of IoT and communication concepts.

  • Pre-assessment: Only 40% of students scored above 60%.
  • Post-assessment: 80% of students scored above 60%, reflecting a 100% improvement in conceptual understanding and problem-solving confidence.

·       Teacher feedback: “This workshop gave our students a rare opportunity to learn technology through doing. It inspired confidence and teamwork among students as well as teachers.”

·       Participant quotes:

  1.       "I never thought I could build something like this! Now I want to learn more about electronics and coding.”
  2.       “It was fun to see how communication happens between devices — I want to be an engineer when I grow up!”

Feedback Highlights

  • 85% of students expressed increased interest in pursuing engineering or technology-related studies in the future.

·       Feedback was overwhelmingly positive from both students and teachers, and this highlights the impact of the program and demonstrates how hands-on IoT education can make technology learning accessible, engaging, and transformative — especially for young learners from government schools.
