Students from IEEE SB Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Visit Serbia on Educational Tour
As part of an educational tour through Serbia, a group of 29 students accompanied by their professor Ioannis Kaissas, from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, visited Niš on Tuesday, October 14. They were warmly welcomed by the ED/SSCS Serbia and Montenegro Chapter and IEEE Student Branch Niš, which organized a rich and engaging program for the occasion. The visit began with guided tours of several laboratories at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Niš. The students were divided into three groups, allowing each group to visit all three laboratories: Laboratory for Microelectronics and Electronic Devices, Laboratory for Robotics, Laboratory for Microgrids and Smart Grids. Following the lab tours, a presentation session was held. Prof. Jelena Nikolić introduced the EU-funded project AIDA4Edge. This was followed by the IEEE SSCS INSPIRE lecture, delivered by Alex Metreveli, titled “Electronics at the Limit: Designing Devices for the Harshest Environments.” In his talk, Metreveli explored current challenges and innovative solutions for designing electronics that can operate under extreme conditions such as high radiation, temperature extremes, and corrosive environments. Special focus was placed on wide-bandgap materials like Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Diamond, and their applications in space, nuclear, and other critical domains. Alex Metreveli is a PhD candidate at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. His research centers on radiation-hard electronics for space and nuclear applications, with experience spanning from device modeling to radiation testing using particle accelerators. The session concluded with an overview of IEEE Serbia and Montenegro Section activities, presented by Prof. Zlatica Marinković (Vice Chair) and Prof. Biljana Stošić (Treasurer). Among other topics, the students were introduced to the IEEE Students Project Conference IEEESTEC, as well as the Women in Engineering (WIE) initiatives, which sparked significant interest. In addition to the organized program, the Greek students also had the opportunity to attend sessions of the 34th IEEE International Conference on Microelectronics – MIEL, gaining further insights into current research trends and developments in the field of microelectronics. Later in the day, the group visited the Science and Technology Park Niš, where they toured the electronics museum showcasing products once manufactured by the historic Electronic Industry Niš. The day concluded with a joint dinner with the participants of the MIEL conference, promoting further networking and cultural exchange. As part of their broader educational journey, the students also visited AIS TE-TO Pančevo and the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences. This visit was a valuable opportunity for academic and cultural exchange, promoting international collaboration and giving students a deeper insight into Serbia’s academic, technological, and industrial landscape.
