Webinar on Localization and Sensing in 5G and 6G
The Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) organizes a webinar by Prof. Alessio Fascista that will provide an overview of localization and sensing in 5G and 6G networks, addressing both technological advancements and methodological foundations. On the technology side, the webinar will explore and compare emerging paradigms such as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), radio stripes, extremely large MIMO (XL-MIMO), mmWave/THz, which are paving the way for unprecedented opportunities for ubiquitous location awareness. From a methodological perspective, the webinar will examine theoretical performance bounds to assess the feasibility of various localization and sensing configurations, and present some advanced signal processing techniques (i.e., phase-coherent processing) that are key to achieving high-accuracy positioning and sensing in 5G/6G wireless systems.
The webinar is free and open to all.

Alessio Fascista received the Ph.D. degree in Engineering of Complex Systems from the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy) in 2019. He is currently a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Telecommunications at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (DEI), Politecnico di Bari. Formerly, he was an Assistant Professor at Università del Salento. He has held a visiting position at the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB, Spain) in 2018, and at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden) in 2022. His main research interests are in the field of telecommunications with focus on statistical signal processing for detection, estimation, and localization in terrestrial wireless systems. Relevant application fields are wireless networks (including 5G and beyond), radars, and emerging network contexts (including intelligent cyber-physical systems, smart devices, and environmental monitoring systems). He is the recipient of the 2021 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS, Italy Chapter) best Ph.D. dissertation award for the thesis: “Cooperative Positioning based on Array Processing and Information Fusion”, and of the “Francesco Carassa 2022 Award” for the Signal Processing area from the Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni (CNIT). He is a member of the Technical Area Committee in Signal Processing for Multisensor Systems of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) and serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society (OJ-COMS) and for the EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing (JASP).
