The electrification of transportation is redefining the role of power electronics and drives in shaping future mobility. As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to evolve, innovations in converter design, motor control, and energy management are becoming critical for achieving higher efficiency, compactness, and reliability. This talk delves into emerging research opportunities in areas such as high-power density traction inverters, bidirectional on-board chargers, DC–DC converters for auxiliary systems, and integrated drive architectures. Emphasis will be placed on the application of wide and ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors, model-based predictive control, and intelligent fault diagnosis for next-generation EV platforms. Furthermore, the growing interaction between EVs and the smart grid—through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) technologies—creates a new research frontier that merges mobility with energy systems. By bridging advanced materials, digital control, and system integration, this session aims to inspire students, researchers, and engineers to explore the next wave of innovation in power electronics and electric drives. The discussion will also highlight pathways for transforming academic research into practical technologies that support the global shift toward sustainable, intelligent, and connected electric mobility.
