Speaker: Dr. Tao Yang, Full Professor, University of Nottingham, UK

Bio: 

Dr. Tao Yang is a full professor of aerospace electrical systems at the Power Electronics, Machines, and Control Institute within the University of Nottingham, UK, and a leading global expert in aviation electrification. His pioneering work in power electronic systems and high-speed motor drives for next-generation aircraft has led to impactful collaborations with industry leaders like Safran, Leonardo Aircraft, and Dassault Aviation. Dr. Yang's contributions are extensive and influential with over 120 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and five book chapters.

Dr. Yang is an esteemed Industrial Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an IET Fellow. He is also a very active IEEE member. As the Chair of Technical Committee on Aerospace Power in IEEE Power Electronics Society and the Inaugural Chair of Technical Committee on Emerging Technologies for Transportation in the IEEE Transportation Electrification Council, Dr. Yang plays a key role in shaping the future of aerospace power electronics and digital twinning for transportation electrification. He also contributes to industry standards as an SAE AE-7M Standards Committee member.

SUMMARY

In this talk, Dr. Yang will present the latest research advancements from his team on aviation electrification, with a focus on contributions within the EU CleanSky & Clean Aviation programme. The discussion will span cutting-edge developments, from high-speed integrated motor drive systems for a turboprop engine mild-hybridisation to development of MW-level electrical propulsion. Emphasising key technological breakthroughs, challenges, and future directions, this talk will provide insights into how these innovations shape the next generation of sustainable aviation.
