Detector development at PSI

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI,) Switzerland's largest research institution for natural sciences and engineering, is home to several large-scale research facilities such as the Swiss Light Source (SLS) and the Swiss Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL).
The Photon Science Detector Group at PSI has a long history of developing X-ray detectors and was pioneering the work on single photon counting for protein crystallography with the PILATUS detector, later commercialized by the spin-of company DECTRIS.
This seminar will provide an overview of the different detectors that the group develops: both single photon counting and charge integrating, both strips and pixels. We explore a few of their applications and touch several challenges such as improving count rate, detecting low energy X-rays and the huge amount of data generated by the next generation detectors. Finally, we will also see how hybrid detectors can be used for electron diffraction experiments.
