•The IEEE PES Student Chapter organized an industrial visit to the HESCOM Transformer Manufacturing Unit, aimed at providing students with practical exposure to the complete process of transformer design, assembly, and testing.
•Engineers explained the basic construction of transformers, including core materials, lamination stacking, coil winding techniques, insulation systems, and core–coil assembly methods.
•Students observed the winding process for both HT (High Tension) and LT (Low Tension) coils, learning about conductor materials, turns ratio, interlayer insulation, and winding machines used in production.
•The manufacturing team demonstrated the tank fabrication process, involving metal cutting, welding, bending, and fitting of bushings, radiators, conservators, and cooling fins.
•Various insulation materials such as kraft paper, pressboard, varnish, and transformer oil were explained, along with their importance in preventing dielectric failure.
•Students witnessed the transformer oil filtration process, understanding moisture removal, vacuum drying, and improving dielectric strength for reliable performance.
•The visit included a demonstration of routine and type tests such as insulation resistance testing, high-voltage test, turns ratio test, winding resistance measurement, and no-load and full-load tests.
•Engineers also explained quality control procedures, BIS standards, and safety practices followed during transformer manufacturing.
•Overall, the visit offered valuable insights into industrial transformer production, testing techniques, and real-world applications in power distribution networks.
