Industrial Visit to Belagavi Railway Station Sub-station
•The IEEE PES Student Chapter organized an industrial visit to the Belagavi Railway Station Sub-station, a fully digitalized and automated power distribution facility operated by Indian Railways.
•The purpose of the visit was to familiarize students with the protection system, relay operations, digital monitoring, and the SLD (Single Line Diagram) of an advanced railway electrical sub-station.
•Engineers from the Railways provided an overview of how the station receives and distributes power for traction systems, station utilities, signaling equipment, and auxiliary loads.
•Students were introduced to various digital numerical relays used for feeder protection, overcurrent, earth-fault, and transformer protection. The officials explained relay settings, pickup values, operating time calculations, and coordination between different protection levels.
•The fully automated control room was demonstrated, highlighting SCADA integration, remote operation capabilities, real-time load monitoring, alarm systems, and event logging.
•Students studied the SLD of the station, which included incoming supply, transformers, bus arrangements, outgoing feeders, and the protection hierarchy.
•The visit also covered breaker operation sequences, interlocking systems, and communication protocols between devices.
•Overall, the industrial visit provided valuable exposure to modern digital sub-stations, enhancing students’ understanding of railway power distribution and advanced protection practices.
