Intelligent systems – some challenging issues from systems reliability perspective

Artificial intelligence is the most popular topic today. Intelligent systems are now everywhere in industry and society, and impacting our daily lives today. Advances in data science and data-driven methodologies are accelerating automation across industries, from manufacturing to infrastructure systems. However, how to monitor, control and manage the operation to ensure the safety and reliability of such a system will be a future challenge. In fact, we cannot wait till systems are fully developed and operational, and managing the design and development of autonomous systems is what the community should pay more attention to. In this talk, some of these issues will be discussed, with reference to the development of intelligent manufacturing, robotics, autonomous vehicles, as some diverse applications.

Prof. Min Xie has been a Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering at City University of Hong Kong since 2011. He entered USTC in China in 1978, and went to Sweden in 1979 to complete his undergraduate studies at the Royal Institute of Technology. He later earned his PhD from Linkoping University in 1987. He was with the National Univ of Singapore from 1991 until 2011. Professor Xie has conducted extensive research in reliability, quality control, and systems engineering and has published over 400 journal papers and 10 books.
