MOVE USA Jan 2026 Tech Talk - Flight to End Polio
Ed Galkin and Peter Teahen’s Flight to End Polio returned in 2025 with a second, record-setting mission. What took three years to prepare for their first circumnavigation is now an ongoing campaign to keep attention on polio eradication. Ed and Peter set three international aviation records on their recent flight.
In our April 2023 Tech Talk, John Ockenfels, who served as Technical Advisor on this flight, and Peter spoke about planning the original flight. In this month’s Tech Talk they will present highlights from the 2025 “Circle the Atlantic” flight — a 37-day journey that departed August 30, 2025 and concluded in early October 2025 — covering roughly 8,800 nautical miles (≈10,127 statute miles) and making 15 landings in 11 countries including Canada, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, France, Poland, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and Newfoundland before returning to the U.S.
Along the route the team held multiple fund-raising and awareness events; the 2025 flight’s stated fundraising goal was $1 million and donations are 100% directed to The Rotary Foundation’s PolioPlus program and matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation. Early reports indicate they will be successful at exceeding their goal.
