The workshop will aim to introduce to the master students about using hardware in developing medical instrumentation by considering the phases of theoretical concept, prototyping, and introduction in clinical practice.

The focus of the workshop will be on electroencephalography. During the frontal lectures, the workshop will introduce the physiology related to the neural system and it will answer the following questions: (1) How to acquire an EEG? (2) How to identify interferences? (3) How to denoise an EEG?

The workshop will include a practical Hands-on Session, which will allow the student to work with hardware in teams. This practical session will be split into two sessions: (1) a session on the basics of hardware (how to use breadboards, carbon resistors, LEDs, etc.) and (2) a session on the acquisition and denoising of EEG signals.

The students will use the Arduino IDE instrumentation (to investigate the design of hardware) and MATLAB (to investigate the EEG processing techniques). The three teams that will obtain the best results will be awarded at the end of the workshop.

The workshop will conclude with a final lecture about the pipeline of industrial engineering of medical devices and it will give insight into the transformation of a prototype into medical devices and, thus, its introduction into the real clinical world.
